Echoes from the Periphery: Innovation in the Non-normative Harmonic Syntax of Edvard Grieg’s Lyric Pieces – Layne Vanderbeek

Dr. Layne Vanderbeek is a teacher from Williamsville, New York where he lives with his wife and two sons. His studies focus on chromatic music of the Romantic era, music theory and its history, and the impacts structural trends in thinking have on analytical perspectives. Today’s presentation focuses on selected piano works of Edvard Grieg in the context of Continental philosophy and music theory. Analytical perspectives on music from non-German composers  is usually accompanied by an attitude of exoticism and relegation; to challenge that approach, the structure will be turned upon itself, overturning the ruling paradigm with its own tools.
